SEMPO Vancouver: Digital Marketing Think Tank

On the evening of October 27th, the RTOWN crew headed over to the SEMPO Cities Vancouver: Digital Marketing Think Tank event to hear our CEO, Luke Aulin present.

SEMPO is the largest non-profit trade organization in the world serving the search and digital marketing industry and marketing professionals engaged in it.  It was very exciting to be a part of such a great group for the evening.

A special mention to Steamworks for doing such an amazing job with the food and drinks and such friendly staff, they really made us feel welcome and looked after.

There were some other dynamic speakers that evening.  We heard Andrew Yang from Bing, Michael Mire from SweetIQ and Lesley Ning from LAT Multilingual.  All had amazing insights into the future of Digital Marketing and their presentations were fantastic, we all learned a lot!

Luke presented on “Local Search in a Mobile-First World”, how very important it is for SME’s to have websites that are optimized for all devices.

Luke spoke on:

  • what is a mobile-responsive website
  • how search has changed to be impacted heavily by mobile
  • why “listening” is the most important marketing activity and why it needs to consistently be tended to

Some highlights included:

Mobile-Internet-Trends-Mary-Meeker-2015-1-550x417

Mobile digital media accounts for over 50% of internet usage.  This means that your customers are looking at your website on their smartphones and tablets.  If your website isn’t optimized to automatically adjust based on the mobile device, the user has to ‘pinch and zoom’ on a 3.5 inch screen to try and find out about your business.  This isn’t the most advantageous use of your website, in fact, this can lose you potential customers as they give up and go to another site.

Another great stat Luke discussed was how, since April this year (2015), websites that aren’t optimized for all mobile devices have dropped between 35-50% in their search ranking.  This is pretty concerning because if a potential customer can’t find you online, it will be very difficult for your site to drive them to your business.

The good news is that optimizing your website to ensure you are visible and easy to find is fairly easy.  We are available anytime to discuss your current website and give you suggestions on how you can improve your site. thereby improving your business.
